Brainstorming

Title: ReNuBots Brainstorming

Purpose: Generate and develop multiple ideas for environmental intervention robots that are powered by renewable energy.

Description:
For your main project, you will design a robot that, in some way, addresses the environmental issues that you and your studio-mates researched and brainstormed in the previous assignments. Since this robot is operating in a far-flung location, you will design it to be powered by a form of renewable energy that can be accessed in its specific location.

Instructions:

  1. Working individually, take three combinations of environmental solutions and energy sources of interest to you. These ideas should come from the research results of the Energy Sources and Environmental Problems assignments. From these combinations, generate three robot ideas for each combination, for a total of nine ideas. Draw a sketch of each idea and a short sentence to describe the intent. (20 minutes)
  2. With a partner, share your ideas, and discuss to develop more ideas or the best ideas. Coaches will roam to support your brainstorming effort. (20 minutes)
  3. For the three ideas that are the most intriguing, refine previous or create three new sketches and descriptive sentences. (15 minutes)
  4. Post these sketches up on the wall. All students will talk about the ideas and sketches that they posted. Perhaps new ideas come out of this discussion; they should be added to the list on the board as well. (20 minutes)
  5. At the end of the brainstorming session, each student should take 2 post it notes and write their name on them. The student should place these notes next to two project ideas that interest them and they would like to pursue. (5 minutes)

Deliverables:
Scan your sketches. Pin these sketches up on the wall, and post the twelve sketches with their accompanying descriptions in the Responses tab (above).

After class, teachers will review the ideas and students interested in them, and assign projects and paired students to pursue these ideas.

At the end of this activity, the group will have created a collective pin-up brainstorming board. With this resource, the studio facilitator should take time to partner project pairs and create project folders before the next studio session. The next studio session will begin with the sharing of project concepts and project partnerships.

 FINAL PRESENTATION

Concept

Thesis

Description

A concept thesis is an important step in starting a collaborative partner project. We will use this time to combine ideas and arrive at the conceptual directions of our projects.

Instructions

Start by sharing the ideas that each partner brought to the brainstorming and what conclusions we arrived at by the end of the session. Take time to figure out shared interests and begin to draft both a project name and a thesis statement of what you will build.

Deliverables

At the end of this activity, each partnership should have a draft of a project name and a draft of a project concept thesis.

Earth Rescue Missions

Description

We will create montages using photo editing software (or physically by cutting and pasting) of a future world. Imagining either a utopia or dystopia and describe how we arrived at this future.

Instructions

Use Photoshop to generate a Fictional Future World.

Start with a blank canvas with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 or greater.

Place each element on a separate Photoshop layer

Use high resolutions (large pixel count) images to build your montage

Consider perspective, color, brightness, and scale

Try multiple different options to determine which best tells your narrative

Deliverables

Create a post to showcase your image montage of a future fictional world.

Write a description to explain the world and how it became that way.

Studio Description

Our world is changing. Pollution of the land and sea, desertification, and climate change are affecting the environment and global flora and fauna in a very real and present way. People all over the world are working to alter this change through cultural shifts, technology, and new ways of thinking about energy and environmental remediation. Renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and tidal, hold the potential to provide power without the need for a central energy source or refueling to aid in these environmental crises. Advancements in solid-state electronics, material science, and nanotechnology promise advancement in the fields of automation and robotics that will redefine how humans interact with the world around them.

This studio will call into question our fundamental understanding of what robots are, and how they interact with the environment, to develop a vision for new Bots that can create understanding about, remediate, interact with, and find equilibrium in our environment.

Students will learn the fundamentals of energy, mechanics, and electronics. They will explore emerging renewable technologies, and research far-flung environments and pressing ecological issues to inform the design of their Bots. These Bots will serve to not only remediate and protect the environment but also to symbolize performance beyond our current conceptions and capabilities regarding improving our planet and well-being.
